Regina has a great chapter in her book and she recommends using professional movers. I recently helped my sister move 20
years worth of stuff and this is what helped make it much easier.
Purge as you go...
Don't move it if you don't have to. One question to ask yourself is "Do I really want this in my new home?"
Have a donate box or bag. Finally return things that you have borrowed. Throw stuff away, it's easier to trash stuff than
to move it.
Label the boxes-
Put what room it is going into and the general contents. For example: Kitchen - dishes. This way you know what is in the
box and where it goes. If at all possible try to avoid using Misc. that title won't let you know what's in the box. Label
the top and a side of the box.
Storage Unit Suggestions -
If you need to use a storage unit, divide it into sections and make a map for it. And list what and which section you have
put into the box into. This way you won't go crazy trying to find where that box of extension cords are. Since you are reading
this you can put your list on the computer. Make sure you leave aisles and space between the sections. If you need to retrieve
something from the unit make sure you put the boxes back where they belong.
Sanity-
Make sure you have a boxes called "Open First". In this box have the things you will need right away. My sis's kitchen
box contained, paper plates, cups, a knife, T.P., paper towels, soap. Also have a "open first" box for your personal items.
Be sure include a towels for the shower. Also include box for your bedding.
As you unpack -
Purge again asking the same question- "Do I really want this in my new home?"
